It
was difficult for me to justify becoming a breeder after
spending so many years working in rescue. Some days I
still wonder if I’m doing the right thing bringing more
cats into the world, but I know that without breeders,
breed clubs, and organizations like The Winn Foundation,
CFA & ACFA, research for diseases like FIP and HCM would
be so much further behind. Those of us in the fancy
drive towards finding cures for the dread diseases that
plague cats, purebred or domestic. We strive to breed
for the betterment of the breed, and we ensure that we
do so responsibly. It is difficult to run a cattery and continue to do rescue work. We do not bring rescue cats into our homes unless special circumstances present themselves. However, we try to do our part to help rescue by supporting the tables they have at our cat shows, donating to their cause locally, and transporting for them when we are able. The most important thing we can do, though, is to screen our applicants well and spay/neuter our cats before we place them. Obsidian does not place whole cats for any reason.
I ask that you, the prospective cat buyer, consider adopting a cat from a shelter or pound. As evidenced by my beautiful HHP, Hippie, the best show cats can sometimes be found where you least expect… and in addition to making a new best friend, you will be saving a life.
